Why L5 and Sacral Movement Are Crucial for Birth
The junction between the lowest lumbar vertebra (L5) and the sacrum is a key mechanical link between the spine and pelvis.
This area:
- Transfers load between the upper body and pelvis
- Allows the sacrum to move during labour
- Influences the size and shape of both the pelvic inlet and outlet
Sacral Nutation Explained
During the later stages of labour:
- The top of the sacrum moves forward and downward
- The coccyx moves backward
- This increases the front-to-back diameter of the pelvic outlet
This movement, known as sacral nutation, creates more space for the baby to descend and is particularly important during the second stage of labour.
What Happens When Sacral Movement Is Restricted?
If movement at L5/S1 or the sacrum is limited:
- The pelvic outlet may not widen optimally
- The coccyx may not move freely
- The pelvic floor may struggle to lengthen effectively
